Right this moment’s Chris’s Cache presents Auger’s astonishing musicality and virtuosity in excerpts from dwell broadcasts of 5 of the composer’s least carried out items—Mitridate, Re di Ponto; Il Re Pastore, Lucio Silla, Ascanio in Alba, and Apollo et Hyacinthus plus Exsultate jubiltate.
From the mid-Nineteen Seventies into the early Eighties the Salzburg Mozart Week pageant each January offered Leopold Hager and the Mozarteum Orchestra in a few of the composer’s earliest vocal works. Along side the Salzburg live shows, the performing forces then went into the recording studio, a mission that was initially issued by Deutsche Gramophon.
Once I first acquired all for opera, I instantly gravitated to works by Mozart. These deluxe DG units have been too costly for me after they have been launched, so as a substitute I purchased reel-to-reel copies of broadcasts of the dwell live shows–I discovered these extra thrilling anyway. Many of the Hager recordings (aside from Il Re Pastore which was issued on LP on the BASF label and so far as I do know has by no means been launched on CD) finally discovered their approach into the whole Mozart version on Phillips transferred to CD to mark the bicentenary of the composer’s loss of life.
Maybe it’s not an accident that two Hager-Salzburg objects that don’t embody Auger — La Finta Semplice and La Finta Gardiniera—are the least profitable of the collection.
The primary Mitridate, a staging on the summer season pageant, options Auger within the castrato function of Sifare and for some incomprehensible cause she was denied that character’s most stunning aria “Lungi da te” which includes a magnificent horn obbligato. Nonetheless, we do get Auger’s thrilling collaboration with Edda Moser in that opera’s nice duet, a bit she’d later carry out with Edita Gruberova when Auger took on Aspasia in a later Mitridate.
My favourite of this trove have to be the Lucio Silla during which Auger is joined by the stellar trio of Julia Varady, Edith Mathis, and Helen Donath.
