Every year Younger Composers Award is introduced by the Nationwide Centre for Early Music in affiliation with BBC Radio 3 and for the 2025 award, younger composers shall be working with the baroque instrumental group The Brook Road Band. Composers are invited to create a brief work for 2 violins, cello and harpsichord – some of the well-liked chamber music groupings of the late seventeenth and early 18th centuries, reflecting the terribly ingenious musical heritage of Purcell, Corelli and Handel – and making a twenty first century response to this excellent music.
The award is open to younger composers as much as the age of 25 resident within the UK and is split into two classes: 18 years and beneath and 19 to 25 years. The Award Day will happen in York on Thursday 15 Might 2025. There shall be a daytime workshop for shortlisted candidates led by Dr Christopher Fox, and within the night the compositions shall be carried out by The Brook Road Band on the Nationwide Centre for Early Music in York.
The successful works shall be premiered by The Brook Road Band in October 2025 as a part of the love:Handel pageant and shall be recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s Early Music Present and BBC Sounds.
Registration closes at 12 midday, Friday 7 February 2025, with the deadline for submission of scores on Friday 7 March. Shortlisted candidates shall be knowledgeable by Friday 12 April and shall be invited to attend the Award Day in York on Thursday 15 Might.
